Queen City Chapter – Kentucky Derby viewers party with a purpose

Written by Ian Flanegan – email

PINEVILLE, NC (WBTV) – Elegantly clad with smiles just as bright as their jewelry, the cultivated crowd at Mercedes Benz South Charlotte supported local youth while indulging in top-shelf liquor.

The Kentucky Derby is the catalyst for this fund-raising event held at the elite car dealership on South Boulevard.  Valets tool the parking lot in vehicles with price tags rivaling those of large houses.

The Jack and Jill Foundation’s Queen City chapter played host to this extravagant viewing party.  The charity was the gleeful recipient of proceeds of this $50-per-ticket excuse to don a suave new suit or dainty new dress – with matching hat, of course.

“The theme tonight was the Derby,” says Duke Craig, voted Best-Dressed Man by the handsome crowd.  He sports a custom gray-and-white pinstripe suit, matching bow tie, top hat and alligator-skin shoes.

Shauna Graves, the Best-Dressed Lady of the evening, is a member of the Queen City chapter of the Jack and Jill Foundation.  She says this fund-raising event will benefit children all across the US.

According to the charity’s website, the philanthropic efforts of the Jack and Jill Foundation have distributed millions of dollars to communities all across America.  It aims to create opportunities for youth to practice leadership skills.

Event organizer Lydia Taggart shares her excitement of the fund-raising success with a gleaming smile.

“We’ve found that there are so many different aspects and individuals in the community that are willing to give but who also have an interest in children, their welfare, and the joy of the sport of horse racing,” she says underneath a bright, diamond-studded orange hat, the size of a sombrero.

Hats at this function run the gamut from fancy and flashy, to flagrant and perhaps even a bit foolish.  It’s all part of the theme; some of us just have good fashion sense.  Check out the video and decide for yourself!
